Got a light?

Before I graduated and before they passed the No Smoking on campus rule, I used to get asked this question many times during the week. My answer would always be the same, No.

I kept thinking to myself, "Do I look like someone that smokes?". Well maybe a little but If you really know me, you would know I don't. But that doesn't stop people from asking me. I could be on my way to the bathroom or on my way to class or even waiting for the bus(when I used to take it) and people would ask me.

Then it hit me.

Why don't people that smoke have their own lighters? Or matches? Or even a tinder box for Christ sakes! Do they misplace their lighters? Do they depend that other people will have lighters? How do they come about asking a person if they have one? Is it random or do they actually choose a person to ask that might fill in the stereotype?

Also, what happens when I get asked this questions is as followed:
Person: " 'Scuse me, do you got a lite?"
Me: "No sorry."
Person: *Awkward Stare*
Me: *Walk Away*

I always thought that if you smoke, you should have a lighter. You should come prepared with your own equipment! Not ask people if they have. Reminds me of those kids in primary school that would ask you for a pencil..... and give it back chewed up!

  2. Best is to go looking for those people at smoke pits, light your shit then when they ask you to borrow your light look at them weird then be like, "What the fuck I don't have a lighter"
    and walk away. Smoooth.

  9. When I did smoke for a brief period (like 2 years) in college, I always had my lighter on me. I even carried it around after I quit, it's a good way to meet and talk to people. When I didn't have my lighter on me though, it was much the same, people would always bother me about getting a light. That and asking for directions.. so I must look like I know where I'm going.

  15. that happen when people also don't buy their cigarettes , the just "borrow" them, then they need a light. i think that every gentleman, even if not smoking, should carry a lighter with himself. i do, even thou i don't smoke

  16. It's a conversation starter. Smoking is an ugly habit, so it shies people away. Asking 'got a light?' bonds smokers with smokers, and increases the friendship circle.

    It's kind of sad, really...

  17. I think they ask people who don't smoke on purpose. Because it's true, people that smoke don't bring lighters out. Why? So that nobody asks for their lighter. So naturally, the person that doesn't smoke should have one.

    Makes sense, doesn't it?! Ish.

  21. its cuz the majority of smokers are also stoners and therefore missplace lighters very easily

  22. we need self lighting cigs. pull a ripchord.

  23. it was probably just a ruse to find someone with a light/probable smoker so they could have a smelling/cancer/smoke buddy on campus.

  24. I speak for myself, it's not on purpose, not a conversation starter. the thing happens when I change a jacket and sometimes forget the lighter in the other one.

haha now seriously... it's a conspiration against you, trying to convert you into a smoker.

  25. Mostly it is just randomly people forgetting and asking the nearest person. I don't smoke either and have been asked on several occasions
